HOW IT WORKS

What is laser and IPL hair removal?

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments use light energy to target pigment in the hair. This energy converts to heat, damaging the follicles and reducing future growth.

Treatment works best on hairs in their active growth phase. Because individual hairs grow in different cycles, several appointments are needed to treat an area effectively.

The aim is long-term hair reduction. Results depend on your hair, skin, treatment area and individual response.

CHOSEN FOR YOUR SKIN

Our hair-removal
technology

Your practitioner will recommend the appropriate option based on your skin tone, hair colour, thickness and treatment area.

Soprano ICE laser

Soprano ICE gradually heats the hair follicles while its cooled treatment tip helps keep the skin comfortable. It offers options for a wide range of skin tones, with settings selected following your assessment.

Ellipse IPL

Ellipse uses intense pulsed light to target pigment in unwanted hair. It generally works best where there is a clear contrast between darker hair and lighter skin. Your practitioner will check whether it is suitable for you before recommending a course.

Nd:YAG laser

Nd laser reaches the hair follicle with less absorption by pigment at the skin’s surface than some other laser wavelengths. This makes it an established option for darker skin tones.

what to expect

Your treatment, step by step

01

We listen and assess

We discuss your goals, current hair-removal routine and previous treatments. Your practitioner reviews your medical history, medicines, recent sun exposure and skin and hair characteristics.

02

We explain your options

We explain the recommended technology, expected course, costs and possible side effects. Any testing needed before treatment is arranged at this stage.

03

Your treatment

Your practitioner checks and prepares the agreed area. You’ll wear protective eyewear while the laser or IPL applicator delivers light energy to the skin.

You may feel warmth or a brief snapping sensation, depending on the system used. Your practitioner will check your comfort throughout.

04

Aftercare and follow-up

You’ll receive written aftercare and guidance on your next appointment. We review your response as the course progresses and check for changes to your health, medicines or sun exposure before each session.

Care at every stage

Suitability, side effects and aftercare

Laser and IPL generally work best on pigmented hair. White, grey, very blonde and red hair may respond poorly or not at all. Fine, downy hair may also be unsuitable. For white, grey or very fine hair, electrolysis may be an option. It treats individual follicles without relying on hair pigment. We can discuss whether it would be more appropriate for your concerns.

Your skin tone helps determine which technology and settings are suitable. Recent tanning or sunburn may mean postponing treatment.

Tell your practitioner about medicines, skin conditions, a history of scarring, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any recent changes to your health.

What are the possible side effects?

Temporary redness, warmth and swelling around the follicles can occur.

Other possible effects include burns, blistering, changes in skin pigmentation and, less commonly, scarring. Occasionally, hair growth can increase in or around the treated area. Your practitioner will discuss the risks relevant to your treatment.

Looking after your skin afterwards

Keep the area cool and treat it gently. Avoid rubbing, picking or pulling at shedding hairs. For 48 hours after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and fragranced products on the area. Resume shaving once the skin has settled and your practitioner advises it is appropriate.

Protect treated skin from sun exposure and use the recommended sunscreen as directed throughout your course.

Contact the clinic if you develop blistering, marked pain or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling.

Before you book

Your laser hair removal questions, answered

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Many people need six or more sessions, but the number varies with the area, hair characteristics, hormones and response to treatment. We’ll discuss an initial course and review your progress before recommending further appointments.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Weybridge?

At Beauty of Weybridge, treatment starts from £[—] per session for [area]. A course of [—] sessions costs £[—] for that area. Your consultation and patch-test fee is redeemable against subsequent treatment, and your full cost will be confirmed before booking.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser and IPL can provide long-term hair reduction, but they do not guarantee permanent removal of every hair. Some regrowth can occur, and maintenance sessions may be needed. Hormonal changes can also affect future growth.

Does laser or IPL hair removal hurt?

You may feel warmth or a brief snapping sensation. Sensitivity varies between people, treatment areas and the technology used. Soprano ICE includes a cooled treatment tip to help keep the skin comfortable. Your practitioner will explain what to expect during your appointment.

Is laser hair removal suitable for darker skin?

Yes. Our Nd laser is an established option for darker skin tones, and Soprano ICE may also be suitable. We’ll assess your skin and hair before choosing the treatment.

IPL is generally less suitable for darker skin because it carries a higher risk of burns and pigmentation changes. Book a consultation first so we can recommend the right option and arrange your patch test.

How should I prepare, and can I shave between sessions?

• Shave the treatment area approximately 24 hours before your appointment, unless we advise otherwise.
• Avoid waxing, plucking, threading and epilating for six weeks before your course and between sessions.
• Avoid tanning and sunbeds for six weeks before treatment. Make sure fake tan has completely faded, and tell us about recent sun exposure or sunburn.
• Arrive with the area clean and free from deodorant, make-up and other products.
• Tell us about new medicines or changes to your health before each appointment.

You can shave between sessions once your skin has settled. Follow any additional preparation instructions provided for your treatment.

Do I need a patch test before my appointment?

If you have not had a patch test at Beauty of Weybridge within the last six months, a patch test is usually required 24–48 hours before your treatment appointment.

Please contact the clinic to arrange your consultation and confirm the timing. Changes to your skin, medicines or treatment settings may mean another test is needed, even if your last test was more recent.

A patch test helps assess your skin’s response but cannot rule out every possible reaction.

What is the difference between Soprano ICE, Nd:YAG and IPL?

Soprano ICE and Nd are laser treatments, while Ellipse uses intense pulsed light—see Our hair-removal technology above for how we choose between them.
